What do you think of this statement from David Letterman?

Written on December 26, 2008 by admin

No matter what your political convictions are, this is an eye opener….What a thankless people we are!!!

David Letterman, on President Bush. (Surprising)

David Letterman wrote this; it’s the David we don’t often see….

‘As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it seems to hit the mark.’

‘The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?
The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain’t happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ‘What are we so unhappy about?’

A. Is it that we have e lectricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

C. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

E. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state.

F. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.

J. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.

K. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

L. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don’t have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn’t take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think about it……are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the ‘Media’ told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn’t have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ”general” discharge, an ‘other than honorable” discharge or, worst case scenario, a ”dishonorable’ discharge after a few days in
the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want, but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by ‘justifying’ them in one way or another. Just ask why
Sorry the rest got cut off but you get the idea.
Thoughts please. Remember Letterman is a Democrat.
Fret?? And if it is?? The point of the question was not to see if some hack could take a swipe at me. And check your own facts I am not here to educate the ignorant anymore, if I did site it you would still not believe. Or worse still slander this country. POINT proven. I only wish it was up to the asker to award points.
Latex.. I will apologize to you and the rest for the Source of the site, it seems that the source was Craig Smith. However the facts remain the same reguardless of who said what. Now could the haters answer the question.
Latex now I have to take it back YOUR site proves the letter is fact.
http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/l/leno-commentary.htm Just in case you want to reread your site.
What does that have to do with the basis of the letter? Shame like most inciting posters on this site you do not allow e-mail. I can only wonder why? Now the thoughts (once again) I requested had to do with content not author.
It is not a celebration of the letter, I simply wanted to point out that, as you sit at your computer drinking your 3 latte of the day you and I mean YOU have much less to gripe about than say Obama's brother. Now I do not agree with Bush and believe the whole government has become socialist and is leading in that direction reguardless of who gets in. We need a real fiscal conservative not the spend spend spend we have on both sides of the isle. With more to come from either. So I do see your point of the touting of social ideals however would you rather not have clean water, I have a well and could care less. When I get my wind generator I will have no need of the "social services". I do appreciate the roads though as bad as they are.
Not really following you but here is a motto I like to consider "It is better to be thought a fool, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Ditto. but I like the song lyric better "if I claim to be a wise man it surely means that I don't know"
What part of You do not have as much as Obama's brother to gripe about did you not comprehend? Or are you a "news clip" voter?
Final detail Latex.. You started by insulting me then can not follow a simple statement where is the "disjointed argument"? I stated you have less to complain about than say Obama's brother" you do. And you still never answered the question, you were more into attacking the questioner. So the only opinion of yours I got was how wrong I was in the post which I apologized for my source yet you continued to discredit the facts listed by saying the post was a fake and I take issue with that. You are a typical liberal attack, attack, attack, when someone does not agree with your version of the world.
Do you people read stuff????

I don’t really give a flying f**ck who said it…there are some very salient points being made.

Bush had huge approval ratings while the credit cards were still working and has gone down the gurgler rather badly ever since the banks started asking for regular payments on some of the consumer durables my neighbours seem so fond of.

In fact it is remarkable how many ex-Bush fans now surround me!! Personally I have never been that fond of either Bush or consumer durables, so apart from being hugely concerned that the money of mine in the bank ought to rightly be installed under my mattress, the current crisis has less effect on me than it does onm many other Americans.

As an environmentalist I don’t drive so the price of gas is marginal in my list of concerns. My advice to those suffering from gas prices more than I is “buy a bus pass.”

I think many within our own society have a very good right to complain of their happiness rating, but since they usually live under bridges and don’t have phones I doubt they were polled.

I am afraid that many in the US and other developed countries have to shoulder much of the blame of it themselves. The govt spent money it did not have. Well so did most of you!! On Newshour last night they said we owe 14 times the GDP on consumer credit and home lending. We buy what we can’t affoprd and get upset when the bills come due!! That is no way to run a society.

That’s an indictment of the people as much as the government that encouraged it. You know I don’t have a degree in economics, but I have one in f**cking history. I know how the Depression started, and you know what?? We just did it again!!

    Source it or delete it.

Funny. Jay Leno 'said' the same thing.

Do people like you actually read stuff?

Btw folks, this letter is totally false (in attributing its origin to Leno or Letterman), poorly written and extolls the value of socialist practices as adopted by our social services (ie fire and police depts, clean water regulation etc.)

Is there a new defintion of 'fiction' I'm unaware of?
It states some Craig Smith is the author and Leno's and Letteman's names were added post composition.

    From the site:
"Jay Leno / Dave Letterman Commentary On America-Fiction!

    Summary of the eRumor:
An article said to be written by comedian and Tonight Show host Jay Leno and reflecting his observation about America and Americans. Some versions say it's Leno talking about George Bush. Newer versions say it's from NBC's "Late Show" host David Letterman.

    The Truth:
This was not written by Jay Leno, but does close with a quote from Leno that someone added and whoever forwarded this left out Craig Smith's name and thought Leno must have penned it.

Someone added Letterman's name along the way.

The commentary was written by Craig R. Smith and published on WorldNetDaily.com at Thanksgiving, 2006.

At the end is the Leno quote, "With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding,
severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and
with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, "Are we sure this is a
good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?" Leno said this on The Tonight Show 2005 after a lawsuit was filed to remove references to God from the Pledge of Allegiance."

You attributed the letter to Letterman. I'm taking issue with that. AS for the content, celebrate it all you want. It won't make it any more opinionated or factual.

Did you study at the Palin Center for Evasiveness and Vague Insinuation?

Not really following you but here is a motto I like to consider "It is better to be thought a fool, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Obama's brother? What's he got to do with Letterman?
I'm also not sure where you got the idea that I'm a thankless American. We're expressing opinions I thought, and I am wise enough to recognize a rambling, disjointed argument.

It’s a great letter and all very true. However, the polling question is far different from David Letterman’s answer. It is not a sin to try and achieve perfection. It is not wrong to expect more. That is what makes this country great.

unfortunately this jumps to the conclusion that just because we have hotels and clean water that we should be happy with our president.

It also ignores the fact that we are unhappy with the way this administration is dealing with countries less fortunate than our own.

ALSO this wasn't written by David Letterman… which has been proven.

it also ignores the fact that there is a real chance that all that he described isn't a given, and if put into the wrong hands, it could all be taken away fairly easily.

it also ignores the fact that while we are RICH in things like cars and air conditioning… we're pretty poor on health-care… and social conduct… The fact that we have the worst infant mortality of any other industrialized country stands out as an example.

sure we should be greatful that we've had it good… but that doesn't take away our right to want things to get better for ourselves, the rest of the world and our children.

Please don’t give Letterman that much credit. He didn’t write it. It was written by Craig R. Smith and published on WorldNetDaily.com in November 2006 under the title “Made in the U.S.A.: Spoiled Brats.”

I find it entertaining, as with most the things Dave says. There is also much unsaid. Could things be worse, you bet. Could things be better, absolutely. His statement about the media is the best part. We are fed cr@p daily from the corporate owned media, and it does it to control the power it has. Free speech in the media no longer really exists, it is now sponsored speech. The horror stories about bankers greed today are just as true about the media, energy, agriculture, you name it corporate business.

I didn’t read it all, but what he’s leaving out is the fact that, right NOW I have a roof over my head and can buy food.

That doesn’t mean I’ll be in that position in 3 months.

It’s also untrue that most Americans can drive coast to coast. They’d need loans of several hundred thousand dollars to buy gas.

Bush has been an unmitigated disaster for this country. He was NOT good for the economy. He has NOT made us safer, but made us MUCH LESS safe. He sent his own soldiers to die and be maimed for NO good reason (wanting to get into the history books as a War President is NOT a good reason to murder millions of people).

A couple of generations ago, people felt that, when they couldn’t work any more, they would be able to afford a place to live, and food, and warmth.

Most people are no sure they won’t be starving on the streets when they can’t work any more.

That’s just nothing to be happy about.

BTW, it”s simply not true that our religious freedoms are the envy of the world. Lots of countries have even less meddling by the religious than we have.

And most countries have things like freedom of movement. But in many, one is less likely to be shot while driving, than we are.

Our infant mortality rates are appalling, as is our literacy rate, and our math and science scores.

And our human rights record is a disgrace.

Republicans stole two elections, and have nearly destroyed my country. That’s just nothing to be happy about.
