Why are we so blind to all the Positives we have, in this country?

Written on December 23, 2008 by admin

good for David Letterman…. This I agree with

A nice reminder!

David Letterman wrote this; it’s the David we
Don’t often see….

‘As most of you know I am not a President
Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is not
About Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it
Seems to hit the mark.
‘The other day I was reading Newsweek
Magazine and came across some Poll data I found
Rather hard to believe. It must be true given
The source, right?
The Newsweek poll alleges that 67
Percent of Americans are unhappy with the
Direction the country is headed and 69 percent of
The country is unhappy with the performance of
The President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry
Just ain’t happy and want a change. So being the
Knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ‘What
Are we so unhappy about?”

A.. Is it th at we have electricity and
Running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of
Having air conditioning in the summer and heating
In the winter?

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of
These unhappy folks have a job?

D.. Maybe it is the ability to walk
Into a grocery store at any time and see more
Food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last
Year?

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our
Cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the
Atlantic Ocean without having to present
Identification papers as we move through each
State?

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean
And safe motels we would find along the way that
Can provide temporary shelter?

G.. I guess having thousands of
Restaurants with varying cuisine from around the
World is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck
Our car, emergency workers show up and provide
Services to help all and even send a helicopter
To take you to the hospital.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70
Percent of Americans who own a home.

J.. You may be upset with knowing that
In the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of
Trained firefighters will appear in moments and
Use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames,
Thus saving you, your family, and your
Belongings.

K.. Or if, while at home watching one
Of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or
Prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun
And a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you
And your family against attack or loss .

L.. This all in the backdrop of a
Neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and
Pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where
90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M.. How about the complete religious,
Social and political freedoms we enjoy that are
The envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks
Unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of
Ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever
Seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet
Has a great disdain for its citizens. They see
Us for what we are. The most blessed people in
The world who do nothing but complain about what
We don’t have, and what we hate about the country
Instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the
President who took us into war and has no plan to
Get us out? The president who has a measly 31
Percent approval rating? Is this the same
President who guided the nation in the dark days
After 9/11? The president that cut taxes to
Bring an economy out of recession? Could this
Be the same guy who has been called every name in
The book for succeeding in keeping all the
Spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist
Attacks? The commander in chief of an
All-volunteer army that is out there defending
You and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is
On the news or talk show? Did this news affect
You so much, make you so unhappy you couldn’t
Take a look around for yourself and see all the
Good things and be glad? Think about
It……are you upset at the President because he
Actually caused you personal pain OR is it
Because the ‘Media’ told you he was failing to
Kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.
Make no mistake about it.

The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have
Volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have
Died for your freedom. There is currently no
Draft in this country. They didn’t have to go.
They are able to refuse to go and end up with
either a ”general” discharge, an ‘other than
honorable” discharge or, worst case scenario, a
”dishonorable’ ‘ discharge after a few days in
the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment
in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the
media. If it bleeds it leads and they
specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a
car crash with blood and guts How many will
watch kids selling lemonade at the corner?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 Percent of Americans are unhappy with the Direction the country is headed and 69 percent of The country is unhappy with the performance of The President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry Just ain't happy and want a change.

I am very grateful for all the things I have, I am thankful for our men and women in uniform. But the "Direction the country is headed" is what the polls are talking about! China bought out yet another, AMERICAN Icon, Budweiser through a German company, we are sending American companies out of this country because American wages are too high, taxes are too high, and the company owners are the only ones getting rich. Exxon has registered record profits for the last 5 years, but isn't sharing it with the share holders. The price of fuel is driving the price of everything up. I work twice as hard for the same money I was making 5 years ago, and the price of everything has more than doubled since then. Doesn't it bother you when you walk into the largest department and food chain in the country (Walmart) and 90% of the products are from other countries? Look at the labels on your American cars, Ford Chevy Plymouth and Dodge, the parts are made overseas, and assembled in Mexico. Bush is subsidizing important failed businesses that cant make a profit anymore with your tax dollars. Doctors pay unreasonable insurance because judges and politicians allow a spilled coffee to become a major law suit. Hospital equipment costs so much, because they have to pay insurance on every piece sold, in the event something malfunctions, and they are sued. Health insurance and health care wont become affordable until that stops.
I am proud to be an American. I love my family, and my life. We will persevere even if the price of gas reaches $20 a gallon.
But NO, I'm not happy with the direction this country is going!!!
Complain about "bad news" all you want, but if you put a "bad news" filter on your TV, you wouldnt be warned of Bad weather, or know that your neighbor needs help because their house burned down. You wouldnt know that traffic is clogged for your morning commute. And political corruption would continue, because you don't know about it. "Bad news" is just an opportunity for good people like you, to do something about it. I am grateful for that too.

It’s funny…my boyfriend and I were just talking about that over the weekend. How people tend to take things for granted, and have allowed themselves to become jaded…and seem to want to look for an excuse to be pessimists. It’s true people need to develop an attitude of gratitude instead of adopting a ‘what have you done for me, LATELY’ attitude. I’m part of the 31 percent that while not complacent, is truly grateful for all she has…both the necessities and small luxuries that some merely take for granted.

I’m happy about all that but we could definitely do more.

“I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70

I don’t own a home but my parents do.

“F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean
And safe motels we would find along the way that
    Can provide temporary shelter?”

If only our homeless could do that but they don’t have the money.

“G.. I guess having thousands of
Restaurants with varying cuisine from around the
World is just not good enough either.”

Not in my city. But I’m kind of happy about that, but they don’t have food from my country.

But I like the rest of what you were/are saying. I just didn’t bother to read all the way down but I agree with you.

Just have to live in India, or any of the third world countries, & I don’t mean the tourist sections, & I bet my bottom dollar we would come away with a lot more appreciation for what we have.
Now I’m not talking down to anyone, because I’m guilty of doing the same thing myself. We get so used to having everything at our beck & call we’re spoiled.
He’s right, how much good news do we hear about. Thirty seconds out of an hour? Blink & you miss it.
Who is exactly telling us what we should think about our President. The Media? Why? Why do we listen to them.
I won’t mention the name of the paper, but we always say if they like them, they’re no good.
We have so much, & yet we complain, we had 9/11, yet there are countries where that is the norm. Nearly every day there are bombings, attacks, etc. It is their life.
We need to thank God every day for what we have.

I don’t know if Letterman wrote this, but I do remember that Dave Letterman got Dan Rather to admit on his show that we “Dodged a bullet” by not electing Al Gore in teh days following 9-11

I agree with Dave. We are the biggest bunch of spoiled jerks in the world. We are so ungrateful that it’s scary. We shouldn’t take anything for granted but we do.
Folks this is an election year. I don’t care who you are voting for, that’s immaterial. Just be glad that unlike some places in this world, you won’t get your hands chopped off for voting.
I’m grateful to live in the richest country in the world, and feel very blessed at the same time. I may not have much, but at least I know I’m taken care of……..

I think It’s Not that we are ungrateful Or don’t realize that we are so spoiled but…The fact That we are so use to being conformed to society’s views on what we should like that we lose or own Liking or Own ability to know what we as individuals truly love…We are all forced to Believe things whether it be by the media, parent, religion, society etc…there are so many things that keep us from being Individuals…So I think That …It’s like that with every situation we face in life…some people practice the method of finding the positives in something so negative as this situation…we can find both positives and negatives….In almost anything…It’s just a matter of the way You look at things…

This is all so true in the sense that as a country we are very fortunate. We need to stop looking at what is wrong or negative about this country and start being grateful for what we have and what is positive about this country. We have so much to be grateful for

Isn’t it ironic that…in the Old Testament, that the God of the Universe rescued the Israelites from slavery. They too, were given freedom and God even supplied them with a new place to call home, the Promise Land. But what did they do? Whine and complained; over and over.

The United States of America (my country) behaves just like the Israelites they too, are an ungrateful, stiff necked people. God will only put up with our nonsense for a season, and then…the consequences…WILL come.

It is time to take a “good” look at ourselves and be thankful to God for the little things as well as the big things. If you don’t think you have anything to be thankful for, your wrong. If your breathing, give Him the Glory and Thanks for every precious breath. Amen.

Without going into my usual long detail, I have to say that it is, unfortunately, human nature to look at only the negative points of things. One should always keep in mind things could be worse. I personally am very happy to be an American and live in America. We have more opportunities than most countries, and just by being able to write this, I am exercising one of the most precious rights that people have fought and died for…the freedom of speech.
Another right is that we are able to choose our leaders, albeit they may not always live up to our expectations. Bush had a great weight and responsibility placed upon him during 9/11 that truly tested his ability as a leader. It is a well known fact all over the world that if you challenge America, America will, without hesitation, defend herself at all and any cost. He did what he had to do and that seems to some a wrong decision and to others a good one. That's what is is to be American: diversity in opinions, religious belief and cultures, which is what America is.
P.S. Get out and Vote. This is a priviledge.

Because of the development of our limbic system from early childhood. We are fed so much negativety…”don’t do that” “stop it” “you can’t do that” “you shouldn’t do this” “be careful” etc. It unfortunately causes us to view things in a negative light. If I ask you: “Do NOT think of a purple tree.” You still see a purple tree in your mind, but it is alos associated with a negative by saying “Do Not”. Society and culture furthers these negative patterns.

It is said that “positive thoughts” are like is “teflon” (slip away) and that “negative thoughts” are like velcro (they stick).

We need to renew our minds in Christ and re-learn to see the positive. Capture every thought and give it to God and have Him turn it from a negative to a positive. It takes a little work, but it is owrth it.

    Peace,
    tman
